Representative Norma Torres, a California Democrat, said during a Discuss the House Laws Committee today That “there should be no doubt” that Vice President Mike Pence should resort to the 25th Amendment and remove President Trump from office.
Torres said she was among the MPs trapped on the balcony of the House of Representatives during the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
I was one of 12 people trapped in the house gallery. I heard gunfire. I saw tear gas smoke spread, and I saw an officer without protective gear facing an angry crowd outside the room. I crawled across that entire balcony. I was in the last group to be evacuated. We ran in. Halls, stairs, near mobs trapped on the ground at gunpoint. I sheltered for four to five hours in a room crowded with people shoulder to shoulder. ”
Torres said that when she was finally evacuated from the Capitol at 3 PM ET, and “was working for my life,” she received a call from her son.
“I answered my phone to my son Christopher,” said Torres. “The call lasted 27 seconds. All I can say is baby, I’m fine. I’m running for my life. I hung up.”
The legislator also called on her colleague to support Democratic Representative Jimmy Ruskin’s decision calling on Pence to “immediately use his powers under Article 4 of the 25th Amendment to hold meetings and mobilize key officials of executive departments in the Cabinet to announce what is clear to a terrifying nation.”
“I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to join me in supporting this decision, but most of all, I urge Vice President Pence to do the right thing,” said Torres.
“Raskin’s decision is not a political document, and he does not take a partisan stance. Anyone who says otherwise is irresponsible and continues to push Donald Trump’s unpleasant agenda.”
Torres also sent a message to Trump: “How dare you! How dare you incite the mob to stop the last step in certifying our election just because they want to pick and choose who their vote should matter and whose voice shouldn’t matter.”
